India issued a travel warning and moves its consular employees to Myanmar

Amid ongoing violence in Myanmar, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued a cautionary advisory for Indian travelers, urging them to adhere to proper safety measures. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted the precarious and worsening security situation in Myanmar during a weekly media briefing.

Jaiswal emphasized the importance of Indian travelers observing safety protocols and taking necessary precautions while in Myanmar, assuring them that the Indian embassy remains available to assist if needed. He specifically mentioned the ongoing fighting in Rakhine State and other areas as significant concerns.

In response to the escalating violence, India has temporarily relocated its staff from the consulate in Sittwe, a city in Myanmar, to Yangon. However, the consulate in Mandalay continues to operate normally.

The unrest in Myanmar stems from the military's ousting of the elected government led by Aung San Suu Kyi in February 2021, sparking widespread armed resistance across the country. Anti-coup forces have recently made significant gains, including capturing a military base in the critical border town of Myawaddy.

The National Unity Government, comprising ousted lawmakers and anti-junta groups, declared control over Myawaddy, further weakening the military's grip on the country. The military has faced losses in border areas with neighboring countries like India, China, and Bangladesh, while also experiencing a depletion in manpower.

As a result of the ongoing conflict, thousands of people have been displaced within Myanmar. The situation remains fluid and precarious, underscoring the need for caution among travelers and heightened vigilance in the region.
