Kalpana, the wife of Hemant Soren, will run for the Gandey assembly seat in the bypoll

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) announced on Thursday that Kalpana Soren, the wife of former Chief Minister Hemant Soren, will be contesting the by-election from the Gandey assembly seat. The seat, located in Giridih district, became vacant after the resignation of JMM MLA Sarfaraz Ahmad.

The by-poll for the Gandey assembly seat is scheduled to take place on May 20, coinciding with the parliamentary elections in the state.

Kalpana Soren, a homemaker with qualifications including MTech and MBA degrees, began her political journey at the 51st Foundation Day celebration of the JMM in Giridih district on March 4. At that event, she spoke out against what she described as a conspiracy against her husband since the Hemant Soren-led coalition government took power in 2019. She vowed that Jharkhand would give a strong response to those responsible for her husband's arrest.

Hemant Soren was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on January 31 in connection with a money laundering case linked to an alleged land scam.
