Middle East is at risk; more warfare is not affordable: UN chief on the Iran-Israel dispute

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres addressed the Security Council, emphasizing the critical need to prevent an escalation of conflict in the wake of Iran's recent attack on Israel. Guterres underscored the potentially catastrophic consequences of further warfare, not only for the Middle East but for the entire world. He urged all involved parties to exercise utmost restraint and take proactive steps to de-escalate the situation.

The recent exchange of hostilities between Iran and Israel has heightened fears of a broader conflict, prompting urgent calls for measures to diffuse tensions. In response to the crisis, the United States asserted its stance of refraining from involvement in any potential Israeli retaliation against Iran, urging caution and careful consideration before any further actions are taken.

The Security Council convened at the request of Israel, which called for condemnation and sanctions against Iran in response to the attacks. Meanwhile, Iran defended its actions as acts of self-defense, highlighting the complexities and differing perspectives surrounding the situation.

Guterres reiterated his condemnation of both Iran's strikes on Israel and Israel's attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, emphasizing the pressing need to prevent any further escalation of military confrontations in the volatile region. Additionally, he reiterated his earlier call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, underscoring the urgency of addressing the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the area.
