Owners of a Vadodara restaurant were detained for selling samosas mixed with beef

In a significant development in Gujarat's Vadodara, the proprietors of an eatery found themselves in police custody after allegations surfaced that they were selling samosas containing beef.

Following a tip-off, law enforcement authorities conducted raids on the Hussaini Samosa Centre situated in the Panigate area of Vadodara. Subsequently, 113 kg of meat was confiscated from the premises and forwarded to the forensic laboratory for analysis, which conclusively determined it to be cow's meat.

The proprietors, identified as Yusuf Sheikh and Naeem Sheikh, along with four of their employees, were promptly apprehended by the police.

Upon interrogation, the owners disclosed that they had been sourcing beef from an individual named Imran Qureshi. Acting on this information, the police subsequently arrested Qureshi as well.

Panna Momaya, Deputy Commissioner of Police in Vadodara, shed light on the operation, stating, "We received intelligence regarding the sale of samosas containing cow meat from a local establishment. Following the raids, we seized 61 kg of prepared samosas, 113 kg of beef, and 152 kg of samosa ingredients. Laboratory analysis confirmed the presence of cow meat in the seized material."

Momaya further emphasized that the proprietors of the eatery lacked the requisite licenses from both the municipal corporation and the food safety department. "They were distributing these samosas clandestinely across the city without informing their customers," added the DCP.

It's noteworthy that the state government had enacted amendments to the Gujarat Animal Preservation Act in 2017. These amendments introduced stringent penalties, including potential life imprisonment and fines ranging from Rs 1 to 5 lakh, for individuals found guilty of cow slaughter.
