Pawan Singh declined the Asansol BJP ticket in order to run for the Bihar seat

Bhojpuri singer Pawan Singh, initially slated to contest the Lok Sabha elections from West Bengal's Asansol constituency as a BJP candidate, has now redirected his political aspirations towards Bihar's Karakat seat. Singh's decision comes after being replaced by SS Ahluwalia in the Asansol constituency.

In a statement on Wednesday, Singh expressed his commitment to fulfill a promise made to his mother regarding his participation in the elections. He affirmed his candidacy for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Karakat, Bihar, marking a shift from his earlier intended run in Asansol.

Singh's nomination for the Asansol seat had generated significant controversy, drawing criticism from various quarters due to concerns over his Bhojpuri music containing derogatory references towards Bengali women. Subsequently, he withdrew his candidacy from Asansol, expressing gratitude to the BJP leadership for their trust but citing unspecified reasons for his withdrawal.

Following Singh's withdrawal, the BJP named SS Ahluwalia as their candidate for the Asansol constituency. In response, Singh revealed his new electoral plan to contest from Karakat.

With the Lok Sabha elections scheduled to take place from April 19 to June 1 across seven phases, and the results set to be announced on June 4, Singh's decision underscores the fluidity and dynamics of electoral politics.
