Police rule out a terror motive for the Sydney mall attacker, who was mentally ill

The tragic stabbing rampage in a Sydney shopping center has left Australia reeling, with authorities identifying the perpetrator as 40-year-old Joel Cauchi, who suffered from mental illness. Cauchi, who came from Queensland, was shot dead by a senior police officer at the scene.

New South Wales police Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke emphasized that there was no evidence to suggest any specific motivation or ideology behind the attack. Cauchi's mental health issues were cited as a significant factor.

The attack resulted in the deaths of six people and left several others critically injured. Among the victims was a nine-month-old baby girl, whose mother bravely handed her to strangers in a bid to save her life. Two victims reportedly had no family in Australia, prompting efforts to reach out to their relatives overseas.

The Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, expressed the nation's shock and sorrow over the incident, emphasizing the heroism of the police officer who confronted Cauchi. Messages of support poured in from leaders around the world, reflecting the global impact of the tragedy.

Outside the shopping centre, a growing collection of flowers and tributes became a poignant symbol of community mourning and solidarity. For many Australians, the senseless violence shattered the illusion of safety in everyday settings, leaving them grappling with grief and disbelief.
