Rajnath Singh attributes the poor voter turnout in polls to the heatwave

Rajnath Singh, senior BJP leader and Defense Minister, attributed the lower voter turnout in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections primarily to the heatwave conditions prevailing in certain areas. In an exclusive interview with India Today TV, Singh stated that the intense heatwave is one of the key factors affecting voter participation compared to the 2019 elections.

Singh elaborated on the reasons for the perceived lack of enthusiasm among voters, suggesting that many believe the Modi government will return to power with a stronger mandate. He also noted that supporters of opposition parties may be disheartened by their performance, leading to decreased voter turnout.

Responding to claims about dissatisfaction with BJP's candidate selection, Singh dismissed them, emphasizing that voters often prioritize the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi over individual candidates. He stressed the need to focus on re-electing Modi as Prime Minister, setting aside any disagreements over candidates.

Earlier in the day, Rajnath Singh filed his nomination papers for the Lucknow Lok Sabha seat, seeking a third consecutive term in the prestigious constituency. Accompanied by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, Singh submitted his nomination papers at the collectorate. Before filing his nomination, he offered prayers at several temples in the city.

Rajnath Singh had previously won the Lucknow seat in the 2014 and 2019 elections. The constituency has a historical significance, having been represented by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Polling in Lucknow is scheduled for the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections on May 20.
