Mike Turner, a Republican congressman and chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, has expressed concerns about the influence of Russian propaganda within the Republican Party. In an interview with CNN's State of the Union program, Turner highlighted instances where he believed Russian messaging had reached Congress, leading some Republican colleagues to repeat false narratives regarding the Russia-Ukraine war.
Turner stated that there were clear attempts by Russia to disseminate communications that were anti-Ukraine and pro-Russia, with some of these messages even being echoed on the floor of the House of Representatives. He emphasized that these false claims and narratives, if allowed to take hold, could undermine efforts to accurately understand and address the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
His comments echo similar sentiments expressed by Michael McCaul, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, who recently remarked that Russian propaganda had influenced a significant portion of the Republican base.
One specific concern raised by Turner was the misconception among some members of Congress that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine was primarily about NATO, which he clarified was not the case. He emphasized the importance of countering such propaganda to ensure a clear understanding of the situation as an authoritarian versus democracy battle.
In addition to addressing the issue of Russian propaganda, Turner also commented on the delay in approving additional aid for Ukraine and Israel. Despite the Senate passing a $95.3-billion foreign aid bill in February, the House has yet to bring it to a vote. Turner attributed this delay in part to internal party dynamics, including challenges to House Speaker Mike Johnson's leadership position from members he referred to as the "chaos caucus."
