Sanjay Nirupam claims that he resigned prior to being fired by Congress

Sanjay Nirupam, who faced expulsion from the Congress party for six years, revealed that the decision to expel him came shortly after he submitted his resignation letter to party chief Mallikarjun Kharge. The former MP, who had represented both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, was expelled from the party following his critical remarks about the party leadership amid discussions with Shiv Sena (UBT) regarding seat-sharing for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

In a post on X, Nirupam shared a screenshot of the resignation email he sent to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, highlighting the promptness with which his expulsion followed. He indicated his intention to provide a detailed statement later in the day.

Nirupam had voiced dissatisfaction with the state leadership of the Congress after Shiv Sena (UBT) unilaterally announced its candidates for four out of six Lok Sabha seats in Mumbai, including the Mumbai North West constituency that he had been eyeing. He criticized the Congress leadership for allowing Shiv Sena (UBT) to exert influence over seat distribution.

The Maharashtra Congress passed a resolution advocating for Nirupam's expulsion, which was then forwarded to the party's high command in Delhi. Subsequently, Nirupam's name was removed from the list of star campaigners for the party.

Despite Nirupam's interest in contesting for the Mumbai North West constituency, his plans were disrupted when Shiv Sena (UBT) nominated its own candidate for the seat, complicating the electoral landscape.
