The AIADMK has launched a scathing attack on Vinoj P Selvam, the BJP's Chennai Central Lok Sabha candidate, for his recent visit to the memorials of former chief ministers MG Ramachandran and Jayalalithaa in Chennai. Once allies with the BJP, the AIADMK branded Selvam as "shameless" and condemned the move as a manifestation of the BJP's desperation.
During his visit, Selvam paid homage to the revered AIADMK stalwarts at the MGR and Amma Memorial at Marina Beach. In a social media post, he emphasized their role in countering the DMK's influence and expressed determination to defeat the DMK in Central Chennai.
However, the AIADMK expressed displeasure over what it perceived as Selvam's opportunistic gesture. Kovai Sathyan, a party spokesperson, questioned the sincerity behind Selvam's visit, labeling it as a last-minute ploy driven by the BJP's desperation. Sathyan cautioned that invoking the names of their leaders at political events would not resonate positively with the electorate.
Moreover, Sathyan insinuated that the BJP's newfound camaraderie with the DMK hinted at an ulterior motive to divide votes, suggesting an "illicit affair" between the two parties.
In response, Vinoj defended his actions, asserting that the legacy of MGR and Jayalalithaa transcends party lines and belongs to the people of Tamil Nadu as a whole. He maintained that his visit was a gesture of respect toward the revered leaders, irrespective of political affiliations. Vinoj lamented the AIADMK's purported neglect of its own leaders and emphasized the universal admiration for MGR and Jayalalithaa among the Tamil Nadu populace.
The exchange underscores the complex dynamics at play in Tamil Nadu politics, where alliances and allegiances shift frequently. While the AIADMK and BJP were once allies, their recent discord reflects the fluidity and unpredictability of political partnerships in the state.
