Sheriff's deputy and New York police officer shot dead in a gunfight; suspect killed



In a tragic incident in Syracuse, New York, a police officer and a sheriff's deputy lost their lives during a shootout at an upscale community. The exchange of gunfire also resulted in the death of the suspect involved.

The shooting occurred around 9 pm on Sunday when officers were investigating a suspicious vehicle in front of a house in Liverpool, a suburb of Syracuse. According to Syracuse Police Chief Joseph Cecile, two officers from the Syracuse Police Department had initiated a traffic stop on the suspicious vehicle around 7 pm. Despite the vehicle fleeing from the stop, the officers were able to locate it at an address in Liverpool using its license plate.

Approximately an hour later, while inspecting the vehicle outside the address, the officers and deputies from the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office noticed what appeared to be firearms inside the car. Suddenly, shots were fired, leading to an exchange of gunfire between the officers and the suspect.

Tragically, one of the Syracuse police officers and the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office deputy were struck by bullets and succumbed to their injuries upon arrival at the hospital. The suspect, who was also injured during the shootout, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The Syracuse Police Department confirmed the deaths of the two law enforcement officers in a statement posted on social media, expressing condolences to their families and fellow officers. Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh described the incident as a "dark day" for the city, expressing sympathy for the families of the fallen officers and acknowledging their heroic sacrifice.
