The government's prompt involvement improved Manipur's situation: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has lauded the significant progress witnessed in the strife-torn state of Manipur, attributing it to the timely and concerted efforts of both the central and state governments.

Addressing the Assam Tribune newspaper, PM Modi underscored the commitment of his government to address the challenges faced by Manipur. He highlighted the deployment of top resources and administrative machinery towards resolving the conflict that had plagued the state. This concerted effort, coupled with the proactive engagement of both the Government of India and the Government of Manipur, has led to notable improvements in the state's situation.

PM Modi specifically acknowledged the pivotal role played by Home Minister Amit Shah, who remained in Manipur during the height of the conflict, conducting over 15 meetings with various stakeholders to facilitate resolution efforts. Additionally, he emphasized the unwavering support extended by the central government to the state government, including ongoing relief and rehabilitation measures for affected populations.

The Prime Minister addressed criticisms from the Opposition, which had raised concerns over the situation in Manipur and even moved a no-confidence motion against the BJP-led government last year. In response, PM Modi assured Parliament of the collective resolve of the nation to stand by Manipur, affirming the collaborative efforts of the central and state governments to restore peace and stability.

The ethnic clashes between the Kukis and Meiteis, which erupted in May last year following a 'Tribal Solidarity March,' have claimed nearly 200 lives. The violence stemmed from tensions surrounding the demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status by the Meitei community, exacerbating longstanding ethnic tensions in the region.

Despite the challenges, PM Modi's remarks underscore the commitment of his government to address the underlying issues and foster reconciliation in Manipur, reflecting a concerted effort to bring about lasting peace and stability in the region.
