This 66-year-old Bengali lady has lived in a toilet for the past year

The story of Mithila Mahato, a 66-year-old woman from Sundradi village in West Bengal's Purulia district, highlights the dire living conditions faced by some individuals in rural areas. Last year, Mahato lost her mud house to heavy rains, leaving her homeless and destitute. Despite seeking assistance from local authorities, she was met with temporary solutions and inadequate support.

In her desperation, Mahato sought refuge in a government-built toilet, originally intended for hygiene purposes. However, due to her lack of viable alternatives, the cramped confines of the 4-foot by 3-foot structure became her makeshift home. Enduring the discomfort of sitting and sleeping within such limited space, Mahato spent over a year in these challenging conditions.

Her plight gained attention as local officials became aware of her situation. The village head expressed surprise at not being informed earlier and pledged to take action. The chief of Purulia Zilla Parishad arranged interim aid in the form of a tent but acknowledged the need for a more permanent solution. However, questions were raised about the effectiveness of government schemes like Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, with some officials and local leaders calling for investigations into the allocation of funds and the lack of assistance provided to Mahato.

Despite efforts to address Mahato's situation, including offers of aid and promises of further investigation, the underlying issues of inadequate housing and support systems in rural areas remain unresolved. The incident underscores the challenges faced by marginalized individuals and the need for more effective implementation of government programs to address their needs.
