Twelve companies are sanctioned by the US for their ties to Iran, three of them are from India

The US Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on several companies, individuals, and vessels, including three entities based in India, for their involvement in facilitating illicit trade and transfers of Iranian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to support Russia's war efforts in Ukraine. The sanctions are part of efforts to disrupt and counter Iran's support for destabilizing activities in the region and beyond.

Among the entities targeted, Sahara Thunder is identified as a key front company overseeing Iran's commercial activities related to the sale of UAVs. It relies on a vast shipping network to facilitate the transfer of Iranian commodities, including UAVs, to various destinations, including China, Russia, and Venezuela.

The three Indian companies sanctioned for their support to Sahara Thunder are Zen Shipping, Port India Private Limited, and Sea Art Ship Management (OPC) Private Limited. These companies have been involved in facilitating the movement of Iranian commodities, including through time-charter contracts and ship management services.

Additionally, the Treasury Department highlighted the role of other entities, such as Iran-based Arsang Safe Trading Co. and Asia Marine Crown Agency, in supporting Sahara Thunder's operations. UAE-based companies, including Safe Seas Ship Management FZE and Trans Gulf Agency LLC, have also been implicated in providing support services.

The US Treasury's Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, Brian E Nelson, emphasized the need to counter Iran's destabilizing activities, particularly its support for Russia's actions in Ukraine and proliferation of UAVs to terrorist proxies. The sanctions demonstrate a coordinated effort with international partners to disrupt the financing of such activities and uphold regional and global security.

Overall, the imposition of sanctions underscores the seriousness with which the US and its allies view Iran's actions and their commitment to combatting illicit trade and support for destabilizing actors.
