In Madhya Pradesh's Rewa district, a six-year-old boy fell into a 70-feet-deep open borewell and was located on Sunday after a tense 40-hour rescue operation. Despite being found, the child remained unresponsive, prompting ongoing efforts to extract him, according to an official statement.
Rescue teams diligently supplied oxygen into the borewell while simultaneously digging parallel pits in an endeavor to reach the trapped boy. The incident occurred in Manika village, situated near the Uttar Pradesh border, around 3 pm on Friday, when the child was playing near the borewell. Initially trapped at a depth of approximately 40 feet, as per earlier reports from officials.
"The boy has been located, and efforts are underway to retrieve him from the borewell. However, he is not showing any signs of response," stated Pratibha Pal, the Rewa Collector, in an interaction with PTI news agency on Sunday.
Teams from the State Disaster Emergency Response Force (SDERF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local administration were actively engaged at the site, employing every possible means to rescue the child.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav assured on Saturday that he was closely monitoring the situation and maintaining constant communication with local authorities to coordinate rescue efforts.
Earlier reports indicated the excavation of pits, approximately 35 feet wide on both sides of the borewell, facilitating rescue teams' attempts to extricate the boy. Oxygen was being continuously supplied to the trapped child through a pipe, as detailed by Additional Superintendent of Police Anil Sonkar.
Furthermore, a team from the NDRF was summoned from Varanasi to bolster the rescue operation. However, the efforts were impeded by unanticipated rains, as stated by Sonkar.
