Upon receiving their intermediate exam results, seven Telangana students commit suicide

The tragic deaths of seven students, including two young girls, reportedly occurred within 48 hours following the release of the results of the Intermediate Public Examination in Telangana. This examination encompasses both the first (akin to Class 11) and second year (Class 12). Police authorities in Telangana disclosed that these fatalities occurred within the initial two days after the announcement of the results on Wednesday, as relayed by PTI.

The Superintendent of Police in Mahabubabad indicated that the two female students who tragically ended their lives had faced academic setbacks, having failed to meet the examination requirements.

These distressing incidents unfolded across various locations, including Rajendranagar on the outskirts of Hyderabad, Khammam, Mahabubabad, and Kollur.

According to a report featured in The Indian Express, the first of these harrowing events transpired in Mancherial district, where a 16-year-old took his own life by hanging at his residence after facing failure in four subjects.

The students who succumbed to suicide were predominantly aged between 16 and 17 years old, and their methods of self-harm varied, including hanging, jumping into a community well, or drowning in a pond.

The Intermediate examination saw participation from over 9.8 lakh students earlier in the year. The pass rates stood at 61.06% (approximately 2.87 lakh students) for the first year and 69.46% (around 3.22 lakh students) for the second year.

In 2019, Telangana was shaken by the tragic loss of 22 student lives to suicide following the release of the intermediate results.

Telangana's incidence of student suicides constitutes 5% of such cases nationwide. According to data from the National Crime Records Bureau for the year 2022, the state ranked 11th out of 28 states in terms of student suicide rates. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Madhya Pradesh emerged as the top three states with the highest number of student suicides.
