US has maintained global order largely by itself, which is isolating and draining: Japan PM

In his address to US lawmakers, Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida emphasized the importance of the United States maintaining its leadership role in global affairs amidst evolving challenges. While acknowledging that the US does not bear the sole responsibility for upholding the international order, he stressed that Japan stands alongside the United States in this endeavor.

During his White House state visit hosted by the US President, Kishida urged Congress to recognize the significance of global commitments and encouraged Americans not to doubt their country's pivotal role in world affairs. He addressed concerns among some Americans regarding the burden of upholding the international order, expressing an understanding of the challenges faced.

Asserting the strength of US-Japan relations, Kishida assured that Japan stands shoulder to shoulder with the United States, emphasizing solidarity in addressing global challenges. He highlighted the new challenges facing the international order and underscored the strategic importance of US engagement in regions like the Indo-Pacific.

Kishida identified China as presenting the greatest strategic challenge, emphasizing its impact on peace and stability globally. He reminded US lawmakers of America's historic role as a global leader since World War II, noting its contributions to rebuilding Japan and fostering a close alliance.

Kishida's remarks come amidst debates in the US, with some advocating for a more restrained approach in global affairs under the 'America First' policy. However, his address reaffirmed Japan's commitment to partnership and collaboration with the United States in addressing global challenges and maintaining international stability.
