15 were detained, 2 were burned alive by villagers in Maharashtra over alleged witchcraft



The brutal incident in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district, where two individuals were mercilessly attacked and burnt alive on suspicion of practicing witchcraft, has shocked the nation. The victims, identified as Jamni Devaji Telami and Deshu Katia Atlami, fell victim to a horrifying act of violence sparked by allegations of involvement in black magic, exacerbated by the tragic death of a child in the village.

Following the gruesome incident, law enforcement swiftly took action, with Superintendent of Police (SP) Gadchiroli Nilotpal and other officials initiating an investigation to apprehend the perpetrators. As a result, fifteen individuals from the village, including Ajay Bapu Telami, Bhauji Shatru Telami, and others, were arrested in connection with the crime.

The accused, residents of Barsewada village, were charged under various sections of the law, including sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), and provisions of the Maharashtra Prevention of Human Sacrifice and Other Inhuman, Inhuman and Inhumane Practices of Witchcraft Act.

The severity of the offense led to the accused being produced before a local court, which remanded them to police custody for five days. This tragic incident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers of superstition and mob violence, highlighting the urgent need for greater awareness and stringent enforcement of laws to prevent such atrocities in the future.
