The devastating forest fires in Uttarakhand have claimed the lives of five individuals, including a 65-year-old woman who tragically succumbed to burn injuries sustained while attempting to extinguish a blaze encroaching upon her farm. The latest victim, Savitri Devi, bravely confronted the advancing flames in Thalpi village but tragically lost her life in the effort.
Authorities have taken swift action in response to these incidents, with forest department officials registering a case against four individuals for allegedly setting fire in the Gangolihat forest range of Pithoragarh district. This underscores the seriousness with which the authorities are addressing the issue of forest fires and holding those responsible accountable under the Indian Forest Act.
In a glimmer of hope amid the crisis, the Director of the Meteorological Center in Dehradun has forecasted the possibility of rain in Uttarakhand starting from May 7, which is anticipated to intensify from May 11 onwards. This anticipated rainfall is expected to aid in extinguishing the fires and provide much-needed relief to the affected regions.
However, the scale of destruction caused by the wildfires is staggering, with over 1,000 hectares of precious forest land lost to the flames since November last year. The economic toll is also significant, with the Uttarakhand Forest Department reporting a revenue loss exceeding Rs 25 lakh due to the fires.
To mitigate further damage, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has taken proactive measures, directing district magistrates to closely monitor the situation and enforce a ban on burning fodder and solid waste near forested areas.
