A 51-year-old passenger named Balakrishna Rajayan found himself in legal trouble after he was caught smoking inside the washroom of a Vistara flight traveling from Muscat to Mumbai.
Rajayan, a resident of Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu, was aboard Vistara's UK-234 flight when the incident occurred. The pilot became aware of the situation when a smoke detector signaled, prompting the cabin crew to investigate. They discovered a cigarette butt in the wash basin of the washroom.
Upon landing at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, the crew reported Rajayan's behavior to the ground security supervisor. Rajayan, who admitted to smoking inside the washroom, was detained and taken to the Sahar police station.
A complaint was lodged against Rajayan for endangering the safety of passengers by violating aviation regulations. He was charged under Section 336 of the Indian Penal Code for endangering the lives of others and Section 25 of the Aircraft Rules. The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
