A newborn in the UP passes away when her family, per the doctor's orders, leaves her in the sun

Authorities have launched an investigation following the death of a five-day-old newborn girl in Uttar Pradesh's Mainpuri, after she was kept in direct sunlight for nearly 30 minutes based on a doctor's advice. The incident, which occurred at Sri Sai Hospital on Radha Raman Road, has sparked widespread outrage and allegations of gross negligence against the doctor involved.

Rita Devi, from Bhugai village in Mainpuri, gave birth to the baby girl via C-section five days prior to the incident. On May 15, the newborn began to exhibit health issues. A doctor at Sri Sai Hospital advised the family to keep the baby in direct sunlight for half an hour, a practice sometimes recommended to prevent neonatal jaundice. However, it is critical that sun exposure is done with caution, particularly during periods of high temperatures.

Following the doctor's advice, the family placed the infant on the hospital roof at 11:10 am. After 30 minutes, they brought the baby back inside. Unfortunately, the newborn later died, reportedly from heatstroke due to excessive and unmonitored sun exposure.

After the incident, the doctor who gave the advice allegedly fled the hospital. Additionally, Rita Devi was forcefully discharged from the hospital, according to her family members.

Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr. RC Gupta confirmed the incident and announced that a probe has been initiated. He stated, "Information was received about the death of the girl. If the allegations are true, then it is gross negligence. Action will be taken after investigation."

This tragic event highlights the importance of proper medical guidance and caution, especially in vulnerable situations involving newborns. The investigation aims to uncover the details and accountability behind this severe oversight.
