Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar announced on Friday that the 17-year-old son of a prominent real estate developer was indeed driving the Porsche that caused a fatal accident on May 19. The accident resulted in the immediate deaths of two IT professionals, Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta after the car rammed into their bike.
During a press conference, Commissioner Kumar revealed that an attempt had been made to shift the blame from the teen to the family's driver. Initially, both the family and the driver claimed that the driver was behind the wheel during the incident. However, evidence, including CCTV footage, confirmed that the vehicle was driven by the accused teen when it left their residence.
Commissioner Kumar stated, "There was an attempt to show that the accused was not driving the vehicle and someone else was driving, but they couldn't do that." He also mentioned that actions would be taken under Section 201 (destruction of evidence) against those who tried to falsely attribute the blame to the family driver.
The police commissioner noted that the internal inquiry revealed lapses by some police personnel in registering the case, and appropriate action would be taken against them. Special counsels are also to be appointed to effectively present the police's case in court.
Regarding allegations of preferential treatment, such as the teen being served "pizzas and burgers" while in custody, Commissioner Kumar dismissed these claims, stating, "We have not seen and nothing has come to our notice regarding any preferential treatment being given at the police station. If any negligence happened by Yerwada police, action will be taken."
In response to public outrage over the incident, a Pune court revoked the bail previously granted to the teenager and ordered his transfer to a juvenile center.
