An Indian flight lands a man in the police net over the largest gold theft in Canada

An Indian-origin man was recently arrested in Canada in connection with the country's largest gold heist, which occurred at Toronto Pearson International Airport in April 2023. The arrest of the 36-year-old individual, Archit Grover, took place upon his arrival from India. Grover has been charged with theft over $5000 and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence.

The stolen cargo, which originated from Zurich, Switzerland, comprised 6,600 bars of pure gold, weighing 400 kilograms and valued at over $20 million. Additionally, CAD 2.5 million in foreign currency was also taken. The heist involved the use of fake paperwork to steal the container from a secure storage facility.

Grover's arrest follows the apprehension of nine individuals in connection with the heist. Peel Police had issued a Canada-wide warrant for Grover's arrest prior to his apprehension at Pearson International Airport.

The investigation into the heist remains ongoing, with warrants still issued for the arrest of other suspects, including Simran Preet Panesar and Arsalan Chaudhary.

Peel Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah described the case as "sensational," suggesting that it could belong in a Netflix series due to its magnitude and complexity. The theft, which involved the entire consignment being stolen from the secure Air Canada cargo facility at the airport, was reported to Canadian authorities on April 18, 2023.
