An Indian student died from stabbing in Australia; two Haryana brothers are being held

Two brothers from Karnal, Haryana, have been arrested in New South Wales, Australia, in connection with the fatal stabbing of an Indian student in Melbourne. The victim, 22-year-old Navjeet Sandhu, also hailing from Karnal, was pursuing an MTech degree in Australia.

Abhijeet (26) and Robin Gartan (27) were apprehended in Goulburn on Tuesday morning following a search by Victoria Police homicide detectives. They are residents of Bastara village in Karnal and are expected to undergo extradition back to Victoria.

The brothers had been evading authorities since Sunday, following the death of Navjeet Sandhu and the injury of another Indian student, 30-year-old Sharvan Kumar, at an Ormond home in Melbourne's southeast.

Navjeet Sandhu, originally from Gagsina village in Karnal, was fatally stabbed in the chest during the altercation. According to his uncle Yashvir, the incident arose from a dispute among Indian students over rent issues.

Sandhu arrived in Australia on a study visa in November 2022 and was pursuing an MTech degree in Melbourne. The accused brothers were also residents of Melbourne.

Described as a bright and aspiring young man, Sandhu's tragic death has deeply affected his family. A GoFundMe page has been set up to support his family, highlighting his aspirations for a better future for his loved ones back home. Sandhu was the sole son of his parents and a caring brother to two sisters.
