The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Ernakulam and Kottayam districts in Kerala, predicting more than 20 cm of rainfall in the next 24 hours. The state is currently experiencing heavy rainfall across its central and southern regions, leading to significant disruptions.
Severe waterlogging has been reported, particularly in the IT hub Infopark at Kakkanad in Ernakulam, with many low-lying areas submerged, causing distress to residents. Major roads in Ernakulam are clogged due to waterlogged streets. Kollam district is also facing severe waterlogging affecting key roads such as MC Road, Chathannur, Nilamel, and the Kollam-Theni National Highway. Numerous homes in low-lying areas are flooded, potentially damaging property and belongings.
A red alert indicates over 20 cm of rain within 24 hours. An orange alert has been issued for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, and Idukki, expecting 11 to 20 cm of rainfall. A yellow alert indicates 6 to 11 cm of rainfall.
The IMD has warned of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in isolated areas from Tuesday to Saturday. Residents are advised to stay indoors, avoid waterlogged areas, and follow local authority updates. Emergency services are prepared to assist.
Non-essential travel should be avoided, especially in heavily affected areas to reduce traffic congestion and accident risks. Residents in flood-prone areas should take necessary precautions to protect their property and ensure safety.
The heavy rainfall is causing significant disruptions in Ernakulam, Kottayam, and other districts. Authorities are managing the impact and ensuring residents' safety. The public is urged to stay informed and follow safety advisories from the IMD and local authorities.
