As severe Cyclone Remal approaches the Bengal coast, Odisha prepares for its effects

A red alert has been issued in West Bengal's coastal districts as severe cyclonic storm Remal approaches, expected to make landfall early Sunday morning. The storm, originating from a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal, is anticipated to bring heavy rainfall and strong winds to the region, with potential impacts extending to Odisha.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts Remal to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm over the east-central Bay of Bengal, tracking towards the coasts of Bangladesh and West Bengal. Wind speeds at landfall are projected to reach 110-120 kilometers per hour (mph), gusting up to 135 mph, accompanied by extremely heavy rainfall in coastal districts.

In anticipation of the cyclone, a storm surge of up to 1.5 meters is expected to affect low-lying areas along the coasts of West Bengal and Bangladesh. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the north Bay of Bengal until May 27.

The IMD has issued a red alert for South and North 24 Parganas districts in West Bengal, with heavy to very heavy rain and strong winds forecasted. An orange alert has been issued for Kolkata, Howrah, Nadia, and Purba Medinipur districts. Potential impacts include localized flooding and significant damage to infrastructure, prompting advisories for residents to stay indoors and evacuate from unsafe areas.

In Odisha, authorities in coastal districts have been put on alert, with preparatory measures underway in anticipation of Remal's impact. Heavy rainfall and wind speeds of 40-50 kmph are expected in Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore, and Mayurbhanj districts.

As the first pre-monsoon cyclone of the season in the Bay of Bengal, Remal underscores the importance of preparedness and response efforts to mitigate potential risks and safeguard affected communities.
