A woman, identified as Shilanti Rahman, has been detained in Dhaka for allegedly being involved in the honey trap and subsequent murder of Bangladesh MP Anwarul Azim Anwar in Kolkata. Shilanti is a Bangladeshi national and the girlfriend of Akhtaruzzaman Shahin, the prime accused in the case, according to Bangladesh police sources.
Akhtaruzzaman, a US citizen and friend of the Awami League MP, allegedly orchestrated the murder of Anwarul at his rented accommodation in Kolkata's New Town area. Shilanti was reportedly in Kolkata at the time of the murder and returned to Dhaka with the main suspect, Amanullah Aman, on May 15.
Police sources suggest that Shilanti was used by Akhtaruzzaman to lure Anwarul from Bangladesh to Kolkata. The motive for the murder is believed to be a financial dispute, with Akhtaruzzaman reportedly paying around Rs 5 crore to those involved in the crime.
The West Bengal Crime Investigation Department (CID) made significant progress in the investigation by arresting Jihad Hawladar, a suspect from Mumbai. Hawladar confessed to murdering the Bangladeshi MP along with four others at the New Town flat. He claimed the murder was carried out under Akhtaruzzaman's orders.
In a gruesome attempt to conceal the crime, the perpetrators skinned Anwarul's body, minced the flesh to destroy his identity, broke the bones into pieces, and disposed of them in multiple plastic packets across Kolkata. Hawladar, a professional butcher from Barakpur in Bangladesh's Khulna district, had been staying illegally in Mumbai for some time before arriving in Kolkata about two months ago, CID sources revealed.
