The arrest of BJP MLA Prashant Jagdev in Odisha's Khurda district for allegedly vandalizing an Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) has sparked controversy and raised questions about the conduct of political leaders during the voting process.
The incident occurred at booth 114 in Bolagad block's Kaunripatna in the Begunia assembly segment, where Jagdev is registered as a voter. Allegedly frustrated by having to wait in a long queue due to a malfunctioning EVM, Jagdev engaged in a verbal altercation with the presiding officer. The situation escalated, leading to Jagdev allegedly pulling the EVM from the table, causing it to fall and break.
The presiding officer filed a complaint against Jagdev, resulting in his arrest and subsequent judicial custody. He faces charges under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Representation of People's Act. The incident has prompted an investigation, including a review of CCTV footage to ascertain the sequence of events.
While BJP leaders claim the allegations against Jagdev are politically motivated and assert that the presiding officer misbehaved with both voters and the MLA, the ruling BJD has filed a complaint seeking stern action against Jagdev. BJD spokesperson Sasmit Patra accused Jagdev of attacking polling personnel and fleeing the scene in the vehicle of Bhubaneswar MP Aparajita Sarangi.
The incident raises concerns about the conduct of political leaders during the electoral process and underscores the importance of upholding the integrity of elections. It also highlights the need for strict adherence to electoral protocols and the impartial enforcement of the law to ensure fair and transparent elections.
