The Kerala chapter of the Congress party has raised concerns over the pricing and occupancy rates of Vande Bharat trains, citing data from the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) indicating significant empty seats on these trains. However, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw countered the claims, asserting that the occupancy of Vande Bharat trains was as high as 98% until May 7.
In a series of tweets, Congress Kerala highlighted an analysis of IRCTC booking data, revealing that more than half of the Vande Bharat trains operated with either empty or partially filled seats. The party emphasized that despite the holiday season prompting increased travel, bookings for Vande Bharat remained surprisingly low, particularly among economically disadvantaged areas.
The party's analysis also underscored the economic disparities, with affluent regions demonstrating higher affordability for Vande Bharat trains compared to economically disadvantaged areas. This raised concerns about accessibility and equity in accessing costly services.
Responding to the Congress's claims, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw refuted the allegations, stating that the occupancy of Vande Bharat trains was robust, reaching 98% on May 7 and averaging 103% for the fiscal year 2024-25 until the same date. Vaishnaw questioned whether the Congress desired the discontinuation of Vande Bharat services.
The Congress further highlighted discrepancies in ticket prices between Vande Bharat and other trains like Garib Rath, noting the prohibitive cost of Vande Bharat fares for ordinary travelers. The party argued that the exorbitant pricing rendered Vande Bharat trains financially inaccessible for average commuters, especially when more affordable alternatives were available.
Additionally, the Congress criticized the Indian Railways' purported neglect of lower-middle-class and impoverished communities, emphasizing the need to cater to diverse passenger demographics. The party expressed concerns over the excessive focus on Vande Bharat trains, stressing the importance of economic growth for widespread affordability.
In March, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated 10 Vande Bharat trains on different routes, marking a significant milestone in rail transportation. However, during an election rally in Uttar Pradesh's Sitapur on May 5, PM Modi accused the opposition of threatening to discontinue facilities like the free ration scheme and Vande Bharat trains if they came to power.
