In his first public reaction to his grandson Prajwal Revanna's involvement in a sex scandal, former Prime Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) (JD(S)) leader HD Deve Gowda stated that he would support any legal action against Prajwal if found guilty. This statement marks Deve Gowda's initial comments on the scandal since it emerged. He also addressed the sexual harassment and kidnapping allegations against his son and JD(S) MLA HD Revanna, describing them as fabricated.
Deve Gowda emphasized his openness to legal proceedings against Prajwal, highlighting the need for justice and due process. "There is no objection from us to taking action against Prajwal. But people have come to know (facts) about the allegations made against Revanna, how the case was created," he said, according to PTI.
Prajwal Revanna, embroiled in a scandal involving explicit videos and accusations of sexual abuse, has reportedly left for Germany. He faces charges including rape, molestation, intimidation, blackmail, and threatening. An Interpol blue corner notice has been issued against him to facilitate his apprehension at global immigration centers.
Deve Gowda's comments align with those of his son, Kumaraswamy, the JD(S) Karnataka chief, who has called for legal action to ensure justice for the victims. Deve Gowda reiterated this stance, stressing the importance of justice for the women involved.
In the midst of the scandal, Deve Gowda announced he would not celebrate his birthday and requested well-wishers to extend their wishes from afar. He further refrained from commenting on ongoing court cases involving his family members, underscoring his respect for the judicial process.
The controversy has also seen Kumaraswamy accusing Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy DK Shivakumar of conspiring against Prajwal Revanna. Meanwhile, a Bengaluru court extended interim anticipatory bail for HD Revanna, who was arrested on May 4, until May 20.
The scandal and the subsequent legal and political maneuvers have stirred significant media attention and public debate, highlighting the intricate dynamics within the JD(S) and its handling of the allegations against its members.
