Explainer: In Iran, what happens if the president passes away while in office

In the event of the death of Iran's President, as outlined by article 131 of the Islamic Republic's constitution, the first vice president, Mohammad Mokhber, assumes the responsibilities of the presidency. However, this transition requires confirmation from the supreme leader, who holds ultimate authority over all state matters in Iran.

To oversee the transition and ensure continuity of leadership, a council comprising the first vice president, the speaker of parliament, and the head of the judiciary must arrange for the organization of a new presidential election within a maximum period of 50 days.

Ebrahim Raisi, who was elected president in 2021, had his term scheduled to continue until 2025, following the usual presidential election timetable. However, given his tragic passing, constitutional procedures dictate that a new presidential election must now be held, potentially as early as July, to select his successor and uphold the democratic process of governance in Iran.
