Floor test following Lok Sabha election results: BJP Haryana crisis

Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has called for a cabinet meeting scheduled for Wednesday at 11 am. During this meeting, a decision is expected to be made regarding seeking the Governor's approval to convene a special session of the state assembly.

The BJP-led government in Haryana is gearing up for a potential floor test following claims by the opposition Congress and Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) that the government has lost its majority status. This assertion comes after three independent MLAs withdrew their support from the government last week.

The decision-making process regarding the floor test is set to commence during the cabinet meeting, led by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini. Notably, the Saini government had previously undergone a successful floor test on March 12, just two months ago. While a floor test typically cannot be held until September, the Governor possesses discretionary powers under Article 163(1) of the Indian Constitution to call for a test of majority when the assembly is not in session.

Sources close to the government suggest that the special session might be scheduled after the Lok Sabha election results. It is noteworthy that Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini is also contesting the election from the Karnal assembly constituency.

Meanwhile, the Haryana Governor, Bandaru Dattatreya, is expected to return to Chandigarh on Wednesday after being away in Telangana. The Governor's office is yet to take action on a letter submitted by the three independent MLAs, Randhir Golan, Dharmpal Gondar, and Somvir Sangwan, regarding their withdrawal of support from the BJP government. The authenticity of the letter is being verified as the MLAs did not use their official email IDs.

The Speaker has clarified that there is no confirmation yet regarding the withdrawal of support by the MLAs from the BJP Government. The Governor's office may require the MLAs to personally appear before him or communicate using their registered email IDs for confirmation.

The opposition Congress and JJP contend that the BJP government has become a minority government following the withdrawal of support by the independent MLAs. Conversely, the BJP maintains that it has the requisite majority, with claims that several JJP MLAs are aligned with the party, and some Congress MLAs are also in contact with them.

The BJP leaders have challenged JJP leader Dushyant Chautala to demonstrate the unity of his party MLAs. The BJP alleges that certain JJP MLAs are siding with them and seeking to replace Dushyant Chautala as the party leader. This development follows Dushyant Chautala's announcement of support to the Congress and the issuance of a whip to JJP MLAs. However, one of the MLAs, Devender Singh Babli, questioned Dushyant's authority to pledge support to Congress, suggesting internal discord within the JJP.
