The United States has issued a cautionary statement regarding potential sanctions risks in response to India's recent signing of a 10-year deal to oversee Iran's Chabahar Port. Emphasizing its commitment to enforcing sanctions on Iran, particularly in light of recent events such as Iran's attack on Israel and subsequent US sanctions, the US reiterated its stance on any business dealings with Iran.
Deputy spokesperson of the US State Department, Vedant Patel, underscored the importance of India articulating its own foreign policy objectives and bilateral relationship with Iran regarding the Chabahar port agreement. He emphasized that while US sanctions on Iran remain in effect, any entity considering business ventures with Iran must be mindful of the potential repercussions, including the risk of sanctions.
The contract between India and Iran, signed by India Ports Global Ltd and the Ports and Maritime Organisation of Iran in Tehran, marks a significant milestone, with India assuming management of an overseas port for the first time. Despite the US warning, India's External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, expressed optimism about the prospects of the Chabahar Port, anticipating increased investments and enhanced connectivity, particularly with Central Asia.
Jaishankar highlighted the pivotal role of the Chabahar Port in addressing connectivity challenges and fostering economic linkages, underscoring its potential to strengthen India's ties with Central Asia. He emphasized that with a long-term agreement in place, the port is poised to attract investments and facilitate greater regional connectivity, aligning with India's broader strategic objectives in the region.
