In Bihar, 10 poll workers pass away from heatstroke



In Bihar, extreme temperatures have claimed the lives of 14 individuals, including 10 polling personnel, as reported by the state government. The heatwave has significantly impacted daily life across several states, coinciding with the ongoing Lok Sabha polls, which are being conducted in seven phases in Bihar, with the final phase scheduled for tomorrow.

The Disaster Management Department of Bihar detailed the fatalities: 10 polling personnel succumbed to heatstroke, with 14 deaths occurring in Bhojpur district, 3 in Rohtas district, 1 in Kaimur district, and 1 polling personnel and 4 others in Aurangabad district. In response, the government has announced ex-gratia payments to the families of the deceased.

Bihar is experiencing severe heatwave conditions, with temperatures surpassing 44 degrees Celsius in several regions. Buxar recorded a peak temperature of 47.1 degrees Celsius on Thursday. Other high temperatures include Aurangabad (46.1 degrees C), Dehri (46 degrees C), Gaya (45.2 degrees C), Arwal (44.8 degrees C), and Bhojpur (44.1 degrees C). Patna recorded a maximum temperature of 40.7 degrees Celsius.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted continued heatwave conditions for another three to four days in the state. Officials have advised the public to avoid heat exposure, stay cool, and remain hydrated to mitigate the risks associated with the high temperatures.

In response to the severe heat, the state government has ordered the closure of all schools, coaching institutes, and Anganwadi centers until June 8. This measure aims to protect children and vulnerable populations from hazardous heat conditions.
