In Chitrakoot, Uttar Pradesh, doctors remove 2.5 kg of hair from a woman's stomach

In Uttar Pradesh's Chitrakoot, doctors performed surgery to remove two and a half kilograms of hair from a woman's stomach after she developed an addiction to eating hair during her pregnancy. The 25-year-old woman started consuming her own hair as well as hair she found around her when she became pregnant. This strange habit ceased after she gave birth, but she began experiencing severe stomach pain and persistent vomiting, unable to eat anything.

The woman's family initially sought help from a nearby hospital, but the prescribed medication failed to alleviate her symptoms. Eventually, she was taken to a private hospital in Chitrakoot, where doctors discovered the cause of her pain. The woman’s stomach was filled with a large lump of hair, a result of her hair-eating habit. Dr. Nirmala Gehani of Janaki Kund Hospital stated that the woman could have died if the situation had persisted.

The surgical operation to remove the hair mass lasted about 45 minutes. The hair weighed approximately two and a half kilograms. The woman was diagnosed with Trichophagia, a rare medical condition characterized by the compulsive eating, sucking, or chewing of hair. Trichophagia can lead to serious health issues, such as malnutrition, digestive system blockages, and potentially fatal complications.
