India and Iran ink agreement for Chabahar terminal's long-term operation

India and Iran have recently concluded a significant long-term contract regarding the operation of the Shahid Beheshti Port terminal at Chabahar in Iran. This agreement, facilitated by India Ports Global Ltd and Ports and Maritime Organisation of Iran, represents India's inaugural venture into managing an overseas port. Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal expressed considerable optimism about the implications of this agreement. He emphasized its potential to not only bolster India's engagement at Chabahar but also to establish a lasting presence in the region. Sonowal underscored the strategic significance of the port, noting its proximity to India and its favorable nautical characteristics, which make it an attractive hub for maritime activities.

The Chabahar port, situated in Iran's Sistan-Balochistan province, stands as a collaborative effort between India and Iran aimed at enhancing connectivity and fostering stronger trade relations between the two nations. India views the Chabahar project as pivotal for regional trade dynamics, particularly due to its strategic location and its potential to facilitate trade with Afghanistan and beyond. Moreover, the port is envisioned as a crucial node within the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) initiative, which seeks to establish efficient transport links between India, Iran, Afghanistan, and various other countries spanning Central Asia and Europe.

The signing of this contract underscores India's commitment to advancing connectivity initiatives with Iran and reinforces its broader diplomatic and economic engagement in the region. Furthermore, the Ministry of External Affairs' allocation of significant funds for the Chabahar Port in the upcoming fiscal year underscores India's steadfast dedication to the project and its recognition of the port's pivotal role in bolstering regional connectivity and trade.
