External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized that the allegations of an assassination plot by Indian agents on Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun would not disrupt India-US relations. Speaking to PTI, Jaishankar highlighted the robust fundamentals of the bilateral ties, stating that the allegations, while being investigated, have not impacted the upward trajectory of the relationship.
Acknowledging strategic convergence on various global issues, Jaishankar outlined key areas of cooperation between India and the US, including driving the international economy, diversifying production, creating new supply chains, ensuring peace and stability, and collaborating in high-technology domains. He cited these as shining examples of the strong ties between the two countries.
Reflecting on the historical context of India-US relations, Jaishankar noted past self-imposed constraints in dealing with the US, particularly during the Nehruvian-Krishna Menon era. However, he highlighted a significant shift during Atal Bihari Vajpayee's government towards deepening ties with the US, which has continued under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership. Jaishankar emphasized that PM Modi's approach has led to a more robust and whole-hearted relationship with the US, yielding tangible results on the ground.
