Kerala Chief Minister urges caution as the state prepares for more rain

Kerala is currently grappling with severe pre-monsoon rains, leading the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue updated alerts. A red alert has been sounded for Ernakulam and Thrissur districts, while an orange alert has been issued for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, and Wayanad districts.

The red alert signifies heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, exceeding 20 cm in 24 hours, highlighting the escalating weather concerns in the state. The orange alert indicates very heavy rain ranging from 11 cm to 20 cm.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has warned residents about the potential hazards associated with the heavy rains, including flash floods, waterlogging, and landslides. He emphasized the need for caution, especially for those living in houses with weak structures or in vulnerable areas. "Heavy rainfall in a short period is expected, which may cause flash floods and waterlogging in urban and low-lying areas. Continued rainfall could trigger landslides," Vijayan said. He urged residents in danger to contact authorities and evacuate to safe locations as a precaution.

As of now, 223 individuals have been relocated to eight camps across the state. Additionally, fishermen have been advised against venturing into the sea due to rough conditions.

### Kerala Reels Under Pre-Monsoon Rain

The relentless rains have caused significant disruptions across Kerala. Major cities such as Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, and Thrissur are experiencing severe waterlogging, with visuals showing flooded streets and stranded vehicles. In Kochi, low-lying areas, including the KSRTC bus stand and MG Road, are inundated.

To assist affected residents, two relief camps have been established in Thiruvananthapuram and Kottayam districts. The agricultural sector has also suffered immensely, with widespread damage reported in the Mavoor region of Kozhikode.

Minor landslides have occurred in Malappuram and Kasaragod districts, and a significant blockage in the Thuravoor area on the National Highway in Alappuzha caused a traffic standstill for over three hours. The Kuttanad region in Alappuzha also faced severe flooding. In Thrissur town, waterlogging has affected shops and private hospitals.

The inclement weather has also disrupted flight operations at Kozhikode International Airport.

Chief Minister Vijayan's warnings and the IMD alerts underscore the critical need for vigilance and preparedness as Kerala braces for more heavy rainfall in the coming days.
