The Election Commission of India reported significant seizures of illicit materials aimed at influencing voters in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. A total of Rs 8,889 crore worth of cash, drugs, and other inducements have been confiscated.
Drugs constituted the largest portion of these seizures, accounting for 45% of the total, with narcotics valued at approximately Rs 3,959 crore being intercepted. This highlights the increasing issue of drug trafficking and consumption within the country, as per the Commission's observations.
The authorities have also confiscated Rs 849.15 crore in cash, Rs 814.85 crore worth of liquor, and precious metals valued at Rs 1,260.33 crore. These items, often used to sway voter decisions through direct inducements or by altering the flow of money, were part of the extensive efforts to ensure fair elections.
The Election Commission emphasized its focus on the seizure of narcotics and psychotropic substances. The data analysis revealed a worrying trend where states and Union Territories, previously known as transit zones for drugs, are now becoming significant consumption areas.
Notably, the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad, Narcotics Control Bureau, and the Indian Coast Guard conducted joint operations resulting in three high-value drug seizures within three days, totaling Rs 892 crore. These efforts underscore the rigorous actions being taken to prevent illicit activities from affecting the electoral process.
