Man had a 7 kilogram tumor removed from his scalp after 25 years of fighting it

A groundbreaking achievement was attained at AIIMS Bhubaneswar as a team of doctors executed a highly intricate surgery spanning 10 hours, aimed at excising an enormous 7kg tumor from the scalp of a 51-year-old man hailing from West Bengal, named Rabindra Bisui. This remarkable feat marked the culmination of a 25-year-long battle for Rabindra, during which the tumor's size exacerbated over seven months, severely encumbering his daily life.

The successful execution of this daunting task was made possible through the collaborative efforts of a multidisciplinary team comprising experts from various domains such as surgical oncology, neurosurgery, interventional radiology, and anaesthesiology, all hailing from AIIMS Bhubaneswar.

Identified as a Synovial sarcoma, the tumor presented formidable complexity owing to its rarity and aggressive behavior. Dr. Sanjay Giri, the Head of the Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery at AIIMS Bhubaneswar underscored the inherent risks associated with the intricate process of extracting such a massive tumor from the delicate scalp region.

Despite the formidable challenges, the meticulous planning coupled with the application of cutting-edge surgical techniques ensured the resounding success of the operation, with the added achievement of preserving the integrity of the skull bone.

Emerging triumphant after the exhaustive 10-hour surgical ordeal, Rabindra expressed profound gratitude towards the medical team, whom he reverentially likened to divine saviors for their instrumental role in restoring his health and well-being.

Ashutosh Biswas, the Executive Director of AIIMS-Bhubaneswar, lauded the triumph as a testament to the medical institution's commitment to excellence, highlighting the absence of any post-operative complications and the complete eradication of cancerous growth, thus heralding a new chapter of hope and recovery for Rabindra and his family.
