Shehbaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Pakistan, has resigned from his position as President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), clearing the way for his elder brother, Nawaz Sharif, to reclaim leadership of the party amid internal discord.
In his resignation letter addressed to the PML-N secretary-general, Shehbaz referenced the turbulent events of 2017, particularly the "unjust" disqualification of Nawaz from the Prime Minister's Office and the party presidency. Shehbaz highlighted that he had assumed the role of party president in the face of adversity, entrusted with the responsibility by Nawaz himself, which he fulfilled with utmost dedication and sincerity.
However, Shehbaz acknowledged that this role had always been viewed as a trust bestowed upon him by their revered leader. With recent developments, including Nawaz's exoneration in legal cases such as the Avenfield and Al-Azizia references by the Islamabad High Court, Shehbaz believed it was time for Nawaz to resume his rightful place as the president of the PML-N.
Citing a deep sense of duty and reverence for the party's principles, Shehbaz tendered his resignation as president. The move comes amidst internal tensions within the PML-N, with prominent figures publicly criticizing the leadership, and the party's Punjab unit unanimously passing a resolution to reinstate Nawaz as president.
