Over the Bay of Bengal, a low-pressure area forms that could intensify into a cyclone

As per the latest update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low-pressure area has materialized over the Bay of Bengal, expected to track northeastward and potentially intensify into a depression by Friday. This system is forecasted to maintain its trajectory, gaining strength as it progresses, and likely reaching the northeast and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal by Saturday evening.

This development marks the onset of the first cyclonic formation in the North Indian Ocean basin for the current year, as highlighted by the IMD.

In anticipation of this weather phenomenon, the IMD has issued alerts for heavy to very heavy rainfall across several northeastern states including Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh on both Saturday and May 26. Additionally, fishermen are cautioned against venturing into the Bay of Bengal waters until May 26, owing to the prevailing weather conditions.

Meanwhile, South India is bracing for significant rainfall, with the IMD forecasting severe to very heavy downpours in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Puducherry on Thursday. Furthermore, rain is anticipated in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands over the next seven days.

In Kerala, districts including Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Idukki have been placed under a red alert due to the expected torrential rainfall persisting until Saturday. Tragically, four fatalities have been reported in rain-related incidents across the state, while flight operations at the Calicut International Airport have been disrupted due to adverse weather conditions.
