Congress leader Sam Pitroda has resigned from his position as Chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress amid controversy surrounding his recent racist remarks. The party accepted Pitroda's resignation, which he tendered "of his own accord," according to Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, who made the announcement on X.
Pitroda faced criticism for his comments suggesting that Indians from different regions resemble various ethnic groups, such as comparing those in the East to the Chinese and those in the South to Africans. The Congress swiftly distanced itself from his remarks, denouncing them as "unacceptable."
Jairam Ramesh emphasized the party's disassociation from Pitroda's statements, emphasizing that they did not reflect the Congress's stance on India's diversity.
The BJP also condemned Pitroda's remarks, labeling them as "racist and divisive."
This isn't the first time Pitroda has courted controversy. Earlier, he stirred debate by advocating for a US-style Inheritance Tax in India during an interview with news agency ANI. Pitroda suggested that wealth redistribution policies, such as an inheritance tax, could promote fairness in wealth distribution. However, he later clarified that his comments were misrepresented and not aligned with the Congress's manifesto for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
