Aam Aadmi Party leader Sanjay Singh paid a visit to party MP Swati Maliwal at her residence in New Delhi on Wednesday, accompanied by Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Member Vandana. Maliwal, a former chairperson of the DCW, had alleged on Monday that a member of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's personal staff "assaulted" her at the chief minister's official residence. Although she did not file a formal complaint, Singh confirmed the allegations in a subsequent press conference, stating that Kejriwal's Private Secretary Bibhav Kumar "misbehaved" with Maliwal and that the AAP supremo would take strict action in the matter.
This incident sparked a controversy in the national capital, with the BJP demanding an immediate FIR and protesting near the Delhi chief minister's residence on Wednesday. Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva questioned Kejriwal's silence on the matter and demanded action against those guilty. BJP national spokesperson Shazia Ilmi expressed concern over Maliwal's safety and questioned if she was being intimidated or pressured into reaching "some kind of a compromise".
Responding to the situation, the National Commission for Women (NCW) announced that it would be sending an inquiry team to investigate the alleged assault of the Rajya Sabha MP. Additionally, the NCW stated its intention to send a formal letter to the Delhi Police to request an action taken report (ATR) in the matter.
