Shashi Tharoor has called for a thorough investigation into Vijay Wadettiwar's contentious assertion that the late Hemant Karkare, former chief of the Mumbai Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), was not killed by terrorists during the 26/11 attacks, but rather by a police official with ties to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Tharoor referenced claims made by former Inspector General of Police SM Mushrif, suggesting that bullets recovered from Karkare's body may not have been fired by Ajmal Kasab, but possibly by a police revolver.
Tharoor also criticized the conduct of the then prosecutor and BJP candidate Ujjwal Nikam, accusing him of perpetuating baseless claims such as the notion that Ajmal Kasab was served Biryani in prison.
