The Non-Resident Tamils’ Welfare Department has issued a statement cautioning Tamil Nadu citizens against falling for fraudulent and exploitative job offers from abroad, particularly from southeast Asian countries like Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos.
Furthermore, the state government has warned that strict legal action will be taken against agents or agencies in Tamil Nadu involved in the illegal practice of sending individuals abroad for work without proper registration with the Union government.
This advisory comes in response to reports of Tamilians being lured to various southeast Asian countries on tourist visas under the guise of Information Technology (IT) jobs, only to be coerced into engaging in illegal online activities later on.
According to the department, individuals who resist such activities may face severe consequences, including electric shocks and physical abuse.
To date, the Non-Resident Tamils’ Welfare Department has rescued over 80 individuals who fell victim to these fraudulent job offers in southeast Asian countries.
Given these developments, the Tamil Nadu government advises citizens to exercise caution and thoroughly verify the credentials of recruiting agents and companies before accepting any job offers abroad.
