Teen from Mumbai passes away from shawarma; two vendors are detained

Police in Mumbai have arrested two vendors following the tragic death of a 19-year-old man who consumed 'chicken shawarma' purchased from their stall. The deceased, identified as Prathamesh Bhokse, reportedly bought the food item from the accused vendors' stall in the Trombay area on May 3.

According to officials, Bhokse began experiencing stomach pain and vomiting on May 4, prompting him to seek medical treatment at a nearby municipal hospital. However, his condition did not improve, and on May 5, he was taken to the civic-run KEM Hospital by his family members.

Despite receiving initial treatment and being sent home, Bhokse's health deteriorated further, leading to his readmission to KEM Hospital on May 9. Subsequently, the hospital authorities alerted the police, prompting an investigation.

After registering a First Information Report (FIR) against unidentified individuals under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including those related to endangering life and selling harmful food or drink, the police initiated an inquiry. Sadly, Bhokse succumbed to his condition on May 10.

Following the young man's death, the police arrested the two food vendors, identified as Anand Kamble and Ahmed Sheikh, and charged them with various IPC sections, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder (IPC 304). The incident highlights the critical importance of food safety regulations and the need for stringent enforcement to prevent such tragedies.
