Two youths were killed and a woman was injured after being hit by a vehicle that was allegedly part of the cavalcade of BJP candidate from Kaiserganj, Karan Bhushan Singh, on Wednesday, according to police reports.
Karan Singh is the son of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the Kaiserganj MP and former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief.
The driver responsible for the incident has been taken into custody, and the injured have been admitted to the hospital. Police have deployed personnel in the area to maintain law and order.
Kernalganj SHO Nirbhay Narayan Singh reported that Rehan Khan (17) and Shehzad Khan (20), who were riding a motorcycle, were hit by a vehicle near a school, resulting in both dying on the spot. The SUV then lost control and struck Sita Devi (60), who was walking on the roadside. She has been admitted to a hospital.
Additional Superintendent of Police Radhey Shyam Rai confirmed that the accused driver, Lavkush Srivastav (30), has been taken into custody.
Locals allege that the SUV involved in the accident was part of Karan Singh's cavalcade and that the occupants abandoned the damaged vehicle and fled in another car.Â
In response to the incident, enraged locals and the victims' family members blocked the road and demanded the arrest of those involved. Senior police officials managed to pacify the protesters by assuring them of swift action.
The BJP has recently named Karan Singh as its Lok Sabha candidate from the Kaiserganj seat, replacing his father Brij Bhushan, who is currently facing criminal charges of sexually harassing women wrestlers.
SHO Singh stated that the bodies have been sent for post-mortem and that an FIR against the driver of the SUV is in process.
