'UK risks reputation as haven for tax evaders': S Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar underscored the imperative for the United Kingdom to adopt a responsible stance concerning the extradition of fugitive economic offenders like Mehul Choksi, Nirav Modi, and Vijay Mallya. Jaishankar warned that the UK risks being perceived as a sanctuary for tax evaders and defaulters if it fails to address this issue.

In an interview with news agency ANI, Jaishankar highlighted India's persistent efforts in presenting a compelling case for the extradition of these high-profile fugitives who have sought refuge in the UK. He noted the favorable outcomes of multiple rounds of legal proceedings in India's favor.

Addressing the specific cases of Mehul Choksi and Nirav Modi, both wanted in connection with the Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam exceeding Rs 14,000 crore, Jaishankar emphasized India's unwavering commitment to securing their return. He acknowledged the challenges posed by the use of various legal arguments by the fugitives but stressed the importance of UK authorities taking a responsible approach in addressing extradition requests.

Highlighting the reputational implications, Jaishankar urged UK authorities to recognize the broader ramifications, cautioning against being perceived as a safe haven for tax evaders and defaulters.

Vijay Mallya, another prominent fugitive accused in a bank loan default case exceeding Rs 9,000 crore, also remains in the UK. Jaishankar's remarks underscore India's persistent efforts to ensure the extradition of economic offenders and uphold the principles of justice and accountability.
