Visit by US envoy to JNU postponed due to pro-Palestine agitation on campus

The planned appearance of US Ambassador Eric Garcetti at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi was postponed due to a demonstration organized by the university's students' union in support of Palestine. The protest, which took place on campus, saw students holding up banners bearing messages denouncing US policies in the Middle East, advocating for a free Palestine, and condemning Israeli actions in Gaza.

The decision to invite Garcetti for an interaction at the School of International Studies was met with discontent by members of the JNU Students' Union (JNUSU), who voiced concerns that the US's support for Israel conflicted with the principles of justice and human rights upheld by the university. They expressed solidarity with Palestine and emphasized their unwavering stance against oppression and injustice.

Despite the students' opposition, the JNU administration has not yet issued an official statement regarding the rescheduling of Garcetti's visit or addressed the grievances raised by the protesters.

This incident occurred against the backdrop of a broader wave of pro-Palestine demonstrations across numerous universities in the United States, sparked by the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine. These protests, initially ignited by events at Columbia University, have since spread to various institutions across the country, highlighting widespread concerns regarding the situation in Gaza and garnering significant attention both domestically and internationally.
